One of the first questions buyers tend to ask as they begin to browse motorcycles is: should I buy a new or used model? The answer really depends on you! Both models have their pros and cons, and what’s best for you is dependent on your experience. We’ve dedicated this article to outlining both the advantages and disadvantages of buying a new motorcycle. Whether you decide to go with a new model or an old one, we hope you’ll visit our dealership in Lewis Center, Ohio, for all your motorcycle needs!

Pros

Technology

Often when motorcycle manufacturers release a new model it’s because new technology has been created that improves the riding experience. This can apply to anything from steering mechanisms to seat comfort. If you’re wanting the best of the best when it comes to features and gadgets, a new model is probably best for you.

Maintenance

Every motorcycle will require some regular maintenance. That being said, older models will have older parts that will need to be replaced sooner. If a shoddy repair was made to the bike by its previous owner, it might come back to bite you. If you’re not experienced with motorcycle repair you’ll probably want to stick with a newer model

Length of Service

A new motorcycle has never been used, ridden, or repaired, which means you’re starting out with a completely clean slate. Because of this newer motorcycle models are more likely to last for several years, as long as you perform some minimum maintenance tasks. While a used model may still have some years left on it, if you’re shopping for the long term it would be wise to invest in a new bike.

Cons

Cost

Motorcycles are a big investment and one of the biggest deciding factors for buyers is price. Because of their increased mileage and various levels of wear, older models are more inexpensive. However, as we’ve explained a bit above, they can come with some expensive repair costs. If you’re needing a motorcycle that won’t break the bank there are a few new models that fit the bill, but overall you’ll have the most luck with an older bike.

Experience

Generally speaking, if you’re a newbie to motorcycle riding, you don’t want a new bike. New riders tend to crash and put intense wear on their vehicles. It’s better to buy an older model that is going to wear out in a few years anyway, then purchase a new model once you’ve got some riding experience under your belt. Your investment on a higher quality motorcycle would be wasted, as the vehicle will likely require replacing, or at the very least serious repairs, in a matter of years.

All of these factors may not apply to your personal experience. Before anything else, it’s important that you consider what you want from your motorcycle and which model will best fulfill these needs.
