Company History
KTM has its roots in Austria, first established back in the 1930s. When the company started, the initials stood for “Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen.” Kraftfahrzeug is a word that translates to “motor vehicle” in German. Trunkenpolz refers to the company’s founder, Hans Trunkenpolz. Finally, Mattighofen is the name of the town that served as the company’s headquarters. The name itself gives you a solid idea about the brand’s start.
Initially, the company was just a vehicle repair shop. At the end of World War II, however, there was a dip in demand for repair operations. In response, the company began focusing on developing their own brand of motorcycles instead. The first prototype was built in 1951 and was called the R100. Soon after, an investor named Ernst Kronreif became a valuable shareholder, and the “K” in the company title came to refer to his last name instead.
When both Kronreif and Trunkenpolz died in the early 1960s, Hans’ son Erich rose to the top of the company’s leadership. He was instrumental in expanding business across Europe and, in 1978, into the United States.
At Erich’s death in 1989, the company was reorganized into four separate organizations, a process that was finalized in 1992. By 2015, however, three of the four entities were reunited.
KTM® Dirt Bikes
KTM is perhaps best known for their off-road motorcycles, also called dirt bikes. Some of the most popular lines of these bikes are their Motocross, Cross-Country, Enduro, and Freeride models. In more competitions than not, the first bike you see cross the finish line is a KTM model. The agility and speed they offer simply can’t be matched!
AMA Supercross Championship
The company’s first entrance into the world of the Motocross World Championship was one to remember. With the slender and lightweight build promoting tight turns and incredible speeds, a KTM bike won the first championship the company had a stake in! Over the next 40 years, these bikes helped win over 260 world championship titles, their striking black, orange, and silver company colors making for a recognizable finish every time.
