The Beginning

The company was founded by two childhood friends: William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson. They got their start by creating single-cylinder engines to improve the simple pedal bike design. When it didn't pack enough power to conquer the hills of Milwaukee, they adjusted the engine to work with a bike without pedals. This set the stage for the release of Harley-Davidson bikes in 1904.

The duo continued innovating and improving upon the design of Harley motorcycles. Then came the unveiling of the first Harley-Davidson factory, which allowed for a much faster output of the iconic Harley bikes. Within 7 short years, the engines on new Harley bikes operated at twice the horsepower of the first design. It wasn't long before Harley-Davidson bikes were spotted holding their own on the racetrack.

Making a Name

The company was off to a great start. Then in 1914, World War One brought a high need for motorcycles. The company got an order for 20,000 Harley-Davidson bikes. By the end of 1920, the company earned the title "largest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet". Everyone wanted to get their hands on the latest Harley bikes.

When hard times fell on the country, Harley-Davidson continued to survive and thrive. The company was one of two that remained continually operating during the Great Depression. Then World War Two hit and with it came an order for 90,000 Harley bikes.
